The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra has announced it will honour its June concerts with Valentina Lisitsa, despite her cancellation by Toronto over her pro-Kremlin political views.

‘We decided it was the best choice to continue,’ a spokesperson said. More here.

Stick around. There are a lot of Canadians of Ukrainian descent in Alberta. (There are also some of Russian). They are likely to be well divided on this issue. They may or may not being pressure upon the Calgary Symphony.

  • Christy says:

It’s unfortunate that hate speech toward one particular group is seen as acceptable but not about others. If she had said the same things about Jews or Muslims or gays/lesbians, she’d be done. But it’s apparently fine to urge war on Ukrainians – a war that has killed over 10,000 and displaced over a million – using slurs and words that equate to the n word.

    • JB says:

Agree 100%. And, there’s a difference between having an opinion, and the hate speech/hate propaganda which is the issue here.

  • Andy says:

Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, not Symphony Orchestra.

Hopefully, we’ll soon reach the fifteen minute mark of this tedious matter (or more accurately, sordid matter, if one spends any time reading Mrs. Lisitsa’s words), and move on.

  • Blane Harford says:

CPO has no problem with what she has said. The TSO did. So, she goes to Calgary. There is no problem.

The article which appears after clicking the link seems to me to be anything but objective. Then I noticed this at the bottom of the page:

“Copyright © Roger Jordan, World Socialist Web Site, 2015”

Draw your own conclusions about the slant of the article.

What a disingenuous picture posted by Lisitsa! (I’m assuming it was by her since it’s consistent with the self-righteousness I’ve read about in her tweets.) No one stopped her from tweeting and even the Toronto Symphony did not demand that she pull down her tweets (if that’s possible since I’m not self-absorbed enough to want to tweet). It merely said that if Lisitsa wanted to post such odious comments that they did not want anything to do with her. They even paid this fleet-fingered, but unmusical, twit her fee.

    Valentina, don’t play the martyr.

  • Albert says:

You go girl! Valentina, keep up the good work. 🙂
