Curtis kid wins US Chopin competition

Eric Lu, 17, a Curtis student of Jonathan Biss and Robert McDonald, took first prize at the Ninth National Chopin Piano Competition Sunday at Miami-Dade County Auditorium, SFCR reports. Details here.

    And perhaps we will hear more of him in November. He’s on the elimination round list for the Polish Chopin Competition.

    It’s a shame that the only teachers who get mentioned are the later ones. Often, the earlier teachers are equally or more important and influential in the development of such extraordinarily gifted young musicians. Eric Lu studied in Boston with Angel Ramon Rivera, and both he and George Li (Wha Kyung Byun) grew up together in the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, certainly one of the finest piano preparatory programs in the world. They are both exemplary young men, and truly amazing pianists and musicians.
