Sakari Oramo was a concerto soloist before he became an international conductor. He’s presently music director of the Stockholm Phil and formerly of the Finnish Radio orchestra (which he swapped for the BBC).

When Patricia Kopatchinskaja turned up barefoot on stage (as she does), Sakari couldn’t resist the chance to play and dance the Ligeti Duo “Balada si joc”.

Helluva piece, right? More maestros should try this.

    fabulous.

Wonderful to see a conductor letting his hair down and play with consummate ease. Who knew that Ligeti could be so melodic and joyful. Oramo is not only an excellent conductor but also a very talented violinist.

But Ligeti’s music could often be very joyful. It’s not all along the same lines as Requiem or Chamber Concerto. Try Hungarian Rock (harpsichord)or some of the piano etudes.

He is also Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
