The federal government has upped its support for the Handel Festival at Halle from 50,000 Euros to 150,000.

A festival at Gottingen receives the same boost.

Small beer, but a significant signs of central approval.

83% of the arts funding in Germany comes from the state and municipal levels. The Federal Government focused on these two groups because of their connections to wider European culture. The article notes that Handel was from Halle but worked in Great Britain. The Händelfestspiele thus strengthens Europe’s “cultural network” – as the Federal arts minister put it.

Stop calling it grants. These are investments into infrastructure. In that case cultural infrastructure.
You wouldn’t call a budget for building a road a grant, would you?
