Reiner Süß,a star of the Deutsche Staatsoper from 1959 and a fixture on East German television with Da liegt Musike drin, has died just short of his 85th birthday. He featured on numerous recordings.

    Reiner Süss was “my” Don Bartolo in Berlin’s Staatsoper unter den Linden in the 90’s, in that unforgettable Ruth Berghaus production of “Barbiere”(of course in German, not Italian). He was a wonderful artist, a funny and intelligent man, and in those years I learned a lot from those many singers, vocal coaches, pianists and all musicians in that wonderful house.
