Regular users of Broadcasting House will have come across the lovely and helpful Phil Hutchinson, whose life ended tragically last weekend.

Phil Hutchinson, died on Saturday in a car accident in Canada. Only a few days before Christmas he’d asked if we could pair up to do some long routes in the Cuillins in May. He was kind and goodhearted and clever and brave, and there were so many adventures he looked forward to having in the new year. I took this photo of Phil several months ago when he asked me to smuggle an ice axe and several ice screws into the BBC’s Broadcasting House one Sunday afternoon, after which we had tea on the roof. Please feel free to share and use this photo of Phil amongst friends.

  • Matthew McFarlane says:

Phil came to visit us at the CBC the week before Christmas. It was a pleasure getting to know him, showing him around, and comparing notes on how the two public broadcasters meet. We were all terribly saddened to hear the news of his passing. From all of us in the music department of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation – our condolences.

Thank you for posting this appreciation of Phil. I worked with him on Radio 4 and we were friends – many of us are very sad that such a kind and bright young man has died too early.

  • Caitlin says:

I met Phil in Banff in November 2014 when he had just got there. I knew quite a few of the audio students, and he seemed really nice. I didn’t know him professionally, but from knowing him in a short time as a person, it saddened me greatly to hear of this news. Still thinking about him years later & wishing the best for his family and those who love him.
