This gorgeous instrument was invented by Görkem Şen of Istanbul.

It works like this: The vibrations from the strings are transmitted via the coiled springs to the frame drums. These vibrations are turned into sound by the membranes which echo back and forth on the coiled springs.

At around 4:40, Mr Sen plays a theme from Beethoven’s Ninth. Enjoy.

This was wonderful!! Thank you for sharing!

  • Peter Lovett says:

Absolutely fantastic, as was the music room incidentally. One could really be motivated to make music there.

Fabulous indeed! What an amazing invention! It brought tears to my eyes! The art of devising new musical instruments is not dead! I’m thinking of Wagner’s tubas, the glass harmonica and mechanical organ triggered by the clock in the church tower for which Mozart wrote music, and so on… Thank you so much for this!

If he develops an international career, though, it won’t be long before he has to write to Slipped Disc to complain about whatever airline he travelled on! Mind you, perhaps he doesn’t have to; people will beat a path to his door just for a look out of his window.
