The Swedish soprano has been awarded the music prize of the city of Duisburg. Probably won’t change her life. Or anything.

The city of Duisburg’s prize doesn’t quite obviously live up to everybody’s standards, but
previous recipients include Yehudi Menuhin, Alfred Brendel , Hans Wener Henze, Krzysztof Penderecki and Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, to name just a few..

One of the fictional characters in the wonderful black comedy series ‘the league of gentlemen’ was from Duisburg. He was a school teacher.

Indeed, it was Herr Lipp . And as the LOG is one of my all-time favorite Brit comedies here a revealing musical clip regarding Herr Lipp from Duisburg.

Thanks Michael. I’d not seen this particular episode. Glad to hear League of G has a following in Germany. Incidentally, the composer Joby Talbot wrote the tritone infused soundtrack.

    Mr. Lebrecht:
I have no idea what your comment might mean. Is it a dig at The City of Duisburg Prize implying it is useless and self serving? If so it is just the latest in a long line of prizes that serve exactly the same purpose. Is it a dig at Nina Stemma, who although I have never had the pleasure to hear live I have enjoyed tremendously via CD and DVD? If so, I have to say “Shame on you”.
So, I guess I will stop reading your blog – it won’t be a loss for you but it will be for me.
