‘The conductor must not only make his orchestra play – he must make them want to play. He must exalt them, lift them, start their adrenaline pouring, either by pleading or demanding or raging. But however he does it, he must make them love the music as he loves it.’

    I have long thought that this is one of the best of Bernstein’s many outstanding videos. Mesmerizing from start to finish. It’s also a must-view for fans of the Rite and reveals some of the score’s inner workings via the insights of one of its master interpreters.
