The Italian media are yammering on about Robert Alagna’s refusal to return to La Scala until he’s guaranteed a non-booing show.

It’s September and they need something to write about.

More importantly, we hear that Riccardo Chailly, the incoming music director, has recovered full mobility in his right arm, broken in July, and intends to conduct the Verdi Requiem in memoriam Claudio Abbado on October 3 and 4 with Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros.

The new era starts here.

They have a Verdi Requiem with only two instead of four soloists? Maybe it’s not so good news after all? 😉

If it was not so sad in essence, it would be funny. Funny to realize that Maria Callas was right when explaining years ago that “it will never change”. Perhaps you’re right M. Lebrecht, perhaps there are a lot of things more important to read and hear. Probably. But maybe it’s also worth taking one minute to remind and hear what this great artist, Maria Callas, was saying, expressing her genuine artist’s suffering, and unability to return at La Scala until she is guaranted to restore her inner peace. The story is being repeated. Catcalling is nothing but working against the opera passion and those who are giving life to it through the talent of their voice. Maybe it’s not important. But maybe it’s key …
