Nielsen Soundscan puts the venerable Leon Fleisher on top of its classical charts this week, with 358 sales of his birthday album on Bridge Records.

Second is Elina Garanca (DG), third Leif-Ove Andsnes (Sony), fourth Joyce DiDonato (Warner).

Must be the first time in a distinguished and turbulent career that Fleisher has released a number one.

  • It’s about time he got some well deserved recognition! Fleisher’s recordings are among my most cherished possessions.

I agree with both your and NL’s enthusiasm for him, but he didn’t exactly languish in obscurity for the last 50 years.

  • Patrick says:

The Chacone that opens the CD is masterfully played expressing an overview of life that us sad, but ultimately positive. The sound of the base notes in the final chord are a wonder just by themselves. Bravo, Leon!
