Both of the annual open air concerts, yesterday and tonight, have now been called off. Plans to remember the late Lorin Maazel have shifted to next weekend’s residency at Vail, an unsatisfactory solution.

And what should the NY Phil have done? Played through the storm and risked the musicians’ and the public’s health?

  • Eric says:

Well, yes, they were cancelled, and the weather is a threat to any out door concert. But, you realize they had 4 other concerts in the series prior to this, right? They even already played Central Park last Friday on a perfect NY night.

    • NYMike says:

While true, Lebrecht’s complaint is about memorializing Maazel, whose death was not reported until Sunday. Perhaps a fitting memorial could be put off until next season.

      • Eric says:

Not really. This is how it starts out: “Both of the annual open air concerts, yesterday and tonight, have now been called off.” Both of the annual concerts were not cancelled, two of the larger series events were cancelled. But, otherwise yes, the planned memorials were cancelled as a result of the rainouts to those two concerts.
