The soprano Latonia Moore, who sang a stupendous last-minute Met Aida in 2012, has announced she’s getting married in a fortnight, and that she’s starting a family. The whole opera world is thrilled for her.

Latonia was due to reprise Aida in New York at Christmas, but that now seems unlikely – even if the Met is up and running by then.

UPDATE: Message to Slipped Disc from Latonia: ‘Who says I’m not singing my Aida performances!? Do you know when I’m due, sir? Exactly.’

Delighted for her. She sang Bess with Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic in September 2012, standing in for Measha Brueggergosman (presumably also at the last minute). An unforgettable evening and fantastic performances by all involved!

And scheduled to sing Aida in Sydney in March.

  • Fabio Luisi says:

Latonia is a wonderful artist and woman. I wish her and her family all the best!

  • Penelope Johnstone says:

My stepmother, Pattye Johnstone, was the vocal coach who believed in Latonia. She had decided not to retire until Latonia was on her way. She, unfortunately, died way too soon. I hope there is some essence of Pattye in some dimension cheering Latonia on!

      Penelope,

I stumbled on this comment you made about Latonia, this is John Tarver. Your stepmother meant the world to me, I came to the hospital to bid farewell to her and you were there also. I would love to hear from you. I don’t know if you will be able to see my email address, hopefully it will show up if you see this. I wish I could post it publicly, but I don’t think that is wise. I’m still in the Dallas area.

      • Penelope Johnstone says:

John – just cruising and found this. I’ll send you a personal message via Facebook Messenger. Hard times-terrible Pandemic.

  • John Tarver says:

I recently saw Latonia on “Porgy and Bess” live from the met. I was so proud of her, I had tears over her accomplishments!
