The conductor, 84, has been out of action with an unnamed illness for over two months. Today he cancelled the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo at the end of July, ‘on the strong advice of doctors’. John Nelson and Yutaka Sado will stand in.

We wish Lorin a full and fast recovery.

  • Mark Stratford says:

I wonder what’s wrong with him. Generally Mr Maazel has had the rudest of rude health over the decades. Seems odd him being ill.

  • Don Ciccio says:

However there is no announcement (yet?) from the Castleton Festival, Maazel’s summer festival at his home in Rappahannock County in Virginia: http://castletonfestival.org/. Usually Maazel conducts a few concerts and an opera, but more often than not he cedes the baton to young conductors.

As you said, let’s wish him speedy recovery.
