That’s the word from the opening night at Glyndebourne of Richard Jones’s new production. Old fogyes were outraged.

No reviews in yet.

UPDATE: First review from Ed Seckerson here.

Expect more heat. Eagle-eyed attenders say Kate Royal was wearing a body suit. Some say it was not tight enough.

“‘Dad’ would rather have liked this!” From the review and the photo, I will not go near it. I last saw Rosenkavalier in Dresden 18 months ago. The conducting, orchestral playing and most of the singing were superb. The production updated to the 1950s was tasteless, boring and made nonsense of much of the libretto. I am not at all against updating per se. David McVicar’s Glyndebourne Giulio Cesare updated to the end of the 19th century was one of the finest productions I have seen. But this Rosenkavalier seems pretty dire!

Interesting that anyone who dislikes these lamentable productions where an opinionated producer thinks he is a greater genius than the composer is branded an ‘old fogey’. Well, so was the little boy who said the emperor had no clothes!

Richard Jones, you say… Nuff said.
