Just in: Top Russian conductor calls for respect of Ukraine sovereignty
mainKirill Petrenko, music director of Bavarian National Opera made the following statement on Ukraine at the annual press conference in Munich this morning:

‘I am watching the situation there with great concern. What is happening there is anything but normal.’ He added that the only way forward would be talks aimed at finding a ‘political solution which respects Ukraine’s sovereignty’.
Ich betrachte die Zustände dort mit grosser Sorge. Was dort passiert ist, ist alles andere als normal. Eine Politische Lösung, die die Souveränität der Ukraine nicht antastet.

Russian born, Petrenko emigrated to Vienna at age 18 and conducted the latest Ring at Bayreuth. He is one of the most respected maestros on the German circuit and the first Russian musician anywhere to respond to the present situation.
Petrenko emigrated to Feldkirch, actually. His father was a violinist in the Vorarlberger Symphoniker. He went to Vienna a little later.
Ya think with a name like Petrenko he might just have Ukrainian antecedents, even if he is Russian-born?
Or maybe he is just a good guy with a world view.
Either way, he seems to speak a good thought. But there seem to be few truly disinterested (look it up, some of you) utterances on this crisis.
I don’t suppose he will be invited to conduct in Moscow now.
