If ever you want a sign of how out of touch the music biz can be, catch this upcoming Billboard award where the Italian pop-and-wouldbe-opera singer is categorised in antediluvian record shop terms.

Or do they think Andrea Bocelli sings in the language of the unreformed Church and ancient Rome?

    Perfectly said Mr. Lebrecht.

  • G Ell says:

Indeed. Let us remember conductors and musicians that have enabled and collaborated with this fraud. By no means is this a comprehensive list. Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev, Alan Gilbert, Renée Fleming, Ana María Martinez, Plácido Domingo, the late Luciano Pavarotti. Who else? I only speak for myself but the second I learn about this sort of watering down, be it involving Bocelli or Groban or Wainwright or Jenkins or Evancho or Sissel or you name it, that’s when I cross them off of my list for good, music snob that I am.

Thank you, G Ell! You took the words right out of my mouth! I have never understood the fascination w/Bocelli. (I don’t understand the fascination w/Justin Bieber, either but that’s another story! Bocelli, at least has some talent!) And yeah–do they think he sings salsa, meringue or something? Is it an April Fool joke 11 days early????
