Keri-Lynn Wilson, the Canadian-born conductor who is married to the Metropolitan Opera manager, is about to become the first woman to conduct an opera at Tokyo’s New National Theatre.

Japan is not quite up to the pace in gender equality.

The opera Wilson is conducting is Madam Butterfly. Women today, she tells an interviewer, ‘generally do not sacrifice their lives to a man in the same way.’

  • Keri-Lynn Wilson is an outstanding conductor. I attended her Dutchman at Montreal and admired the originality, sensitivity, and dramatic sense of her interpretation. I’m keen to hear her again.

We saw the Juilliard Opera production of Gianni Schicchi and L’Heure Espagnole conducted by Wilson a couple of years ago. Putting aside that she’s an attractive woman married to a music industry executive, her conducting was first-rate in music not exactly simple.

  • Ole Bohn says:

She did a wonderful performance of Tosca at the Norwegian Opera about 8 years ago. Also, what a nice person to work with!
