The excellent principal cellist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Floris Mijnders, is upgrading to the Munich Phil. Presumably to work with Rotterdam old boy Valery Gergiev.

And to get the significant pay rise…

More transfers in the Rotterdam Phil:

Congratulations to Pieter Nuytten who won the audition for 1st Bassoon in the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin and Herman van Kogelenberg who recently upgraded to principal flutist at the Munich Phil.

  • Brian says:

I’m not so sure about the word “upgrading”, Norman. The Rotterdam orchestra is outstanding and currently on fantastic form with Yannick, their recent signing. Haven’t heard the MPhil lately, but reviews over the last few months and years have been mixed.

Add to that the stiff competition within the city limits… Most people would agree Mariss’s Bayerischer Rundfunk band is not only better, but among the best orchestras in the world.

Anyway, Rotterdam’s loss is Munich’s gain. Both Floris Mijnders and his predecessor, Marien van Staalen, are wonderful cellists!

  • Geert says:

After principal bassoonist Bram van Sambeek, principal flutist Herman Kogelenberg and principal clarinetist Olivier Patey have left the Rotterdam Philharmonic in the past few years, the exodus continues and in one day two other star soloists leave this amazing orchestra: Floris Mijnders, principal cellist and Pieter Nuytten principal bassoonist.

Is this the end of a great tradition? What is going on Hans Waege, general manager and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, chief conductor?

  • Malcolm James says:

I suspect, as Gareth say above, that they’re just paid more in Germany.
