Richard Hayman, who used to make arrangements for Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, has died at 93, a year after his retirment.

He founded the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s pops concerts and conducted them for three decades in spangly jackets.

He was also a&r chief for Mercury Records. Helluva nice guy, say his musicians.

What a nice guy. I knew him and I worked with him once. Really neat person. I am so sorry to hear this.

I had the great pleasure of working with Richard as a musician in the Florida Sunshine Pops orchestra (now defunct) for several years during the latter part of his life. Not only was he a renowned arranger for over six decades, but he was also a terrific harmonica virtuoso and composer of many songs, including the mega-hit “Ruby”. He was indeed a warm, friendly and unpretentious man, and he was loved by his musicians and public alike. We’ll miss him.
