This makes me so happy. Renee Fleming is a wonderful singer and I have enjoyed talking with her on several occasions when she has sung here in Buffalo. I think once fans hear the anthem sung by an operatically trained voice they will never want to go back. It’s great for the profile of classical music and opera!
“New Jersey has always had a soft spot for the sopranos.” Nice.
Trashy coverage.
But positive. It could have been hostile — it is, after all, the ultimate crossover. Most fans will go for a beer. All the opera-loving devotees of the Seahawaks and the other ones will, of course stay.
Memorable performances in my book were those of Ara Berberian, a fine Detroit-born bass who sang the Star Spangled Banner at a World Series game there in1984. At another game in the same series we were treated to a first-class performance by the Oak Ridge Boys. In these widely diverse genres it was a pleasure to hear no egos, no nonsense, but instead fine music from performers who understood that the occasion was to honor the spirit of American sport — and not about them!
Great choice and we can be sure there will be no “wardrobe malfunction” as famously happened a few years back at the Super Bowl.
