  • Tommy says:

Well, both play very loudly. I wonder which one will drown out the other?

  • Sanda Schuldmann says:

Sad, very sad. Sad to see him getting so low. For what? Why?

The more I see and hear of him and him, the sadder I get.

  • Sally Funnell says:

I think Metallica have more credibility…

  • Micaela says:

Metacallica played with the San Francisco Symphony in 2007. I think they even made a DVD or recording of it. Here;s a youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziThYl6B2vw

  • On a scale of 1-10, how facetious is your end of civilization remark? This kind of thing is whimsical and cool, but it would be a lot more valid if the Academy treated classical music way better than it does all year round and during their bombastic broadcasts. What’s sad is NARAS seems to think this is serving classical rather than the lark that it ought to be. And by the way, Metallica is a great band and a great choice. As long as the classical world convinces itself that this kind of thing is “stooping” – that is how long classical will remain in crisis.

  • Cambridge says:

I am just amazed at the blind prejudice!

  • At what point does the artistic credibility end for a performer and the commercial sell-out product persona take over? In the case of Metallica as well as Lang Lang, it was years ago – if it ever was. But in the Grammy’s defense, they’re notorious for putting dog-and-pony shows on the stage.

I’d love to sit in on the rehearsals. It would be funny to watch Lang trying to convey even the simplest musical idea to Metallica since they’re on record for being somewhat proud of not knowing of basic music theory or even how to read sheet music.

  • Phil says:

An insult to both genres, although it’s unclear what Lang Lang;s genre is anyway.

  • Rgiarola says:

Metallica got much more credibility. The ones that dislike saying that they are “commercial”, It is just because the band doesn’t do the same thing they did in the 80’s, when even these people liked a lot the status of biggest underground band of that era. One of these sell out commercial attitudes is to mix with people such Lang Lang. In this case, I think the most sadness and unforgiven one ever in the band 33 years. “Tell me who you go with and I’ll tell you who you are” – Shame on you Metallica.

Metallica got many expressive and influential albums on the Rock history, such Master of Puppets, and Justice or all, Black album etc. After huge success of this last one in 1991 along Nirvana “Nevermind”, It started to be difficult to identify the edge between Pop and Rock, since everyone in the planet started to introduce hard guitar riffs even on ballads. Although It wasn’t any news since others such Yes and Deep Purple had already recorded with London Symphony in the 70’s, Metallica recorded on 1999 with San Francisco Symphony conducted by Michael Kamen that made up orchestration of the band’s songs. (It wasn’t on 1997 as Micaela said – The record sessions was at Berkley’s Community Theatre at UC on April 99).

Most Rock bands had no idea about music theory. It isn’t Metallica exclusivity. However Michael Kamen or London Symphony didn’t have problems to deal with it.
