Lovely violinist and charming lady.
She is a wonderful artist indeed, and a great advocate of Polish composers such Karol Szymanowski or Grazyna Bacewicz. I am delighted to see her name mentioned here. Thank you Mr. Lebrecht!
Wanda!! Thank you for posting. I grew up treasuring the few albums of her that I had in my possession during the late 60s and early 70s. A magnificent artist, indeed!
I wish there were more interviews of her in English…(hint, hint).
Still my all-time favorite Szymanowksi fiddler!
It was a joy to have such a marvelous artist as colleague at the Sydney Conservatorium. Many years ago I heard her with the Mendelssohn concerto in Oslo.
It would be nice to reissue her wonderful American recordings of the 70 (Connoisseur, with Antonio Barbosa). One of the best Franck Sonatas ever.
Any reason you don’t mention her full name in this article? I’m sure I’m not the only one who doesn’t actually know who she is.
Wanda Wiłkomirska
For years I kept a wonderful poster for a concert she performed to benefit Solidarity, in which telephone posts were replace by violin necks.
