They’re putting a brave face on it, announcing $1m in new donations. But the Milwaukee Symphony has only weeks in which to raise another $4m if it is to stave off bankruptcy.
1) It’s not uncommon for the big gifts to come in at the end of a campaign like this one; people giving large sums of money want to know that that the campaign is going to succeed if they give.
2) The labor agreement allows for a shutdown in case of financial emergency, which could be short of actually declaring bankruptcy.
