Busseto, Catania, Lugo, Milan, Napoli, Palermo, Parma, Pesaro, Ravenna, Rome, Venice — these are the opera houses I have attended in Italy.

Of all of them, my favorite is the Teatro Bellini in Catania, the furthest to the south, for its burnished but decayed beauty, outside and in, its perfect dimensions and its clear, warm, incomparable sound. (In fact, there is only one house I love more, and it is in another country, with worse financial troubles!)

It does not surprise me that Teatro Bellini has run out of money, but it will be the beginning of the end of a centuries-long era if Italy (and Europe) allows this great institution to close — a “crime,” in fact, as Riccardo Muti might say.

I’ve been there : one of the most beautiful theatres in the world but already in 1985 the outside needed urgent renovation. and why does the guy speak in italian and not sicilian?

The protest last night before the concert

LONDON – The 2013 season of Bellini the curtain falls to the sound of protest. A coffin, the workers dressed in black and the notes of a Chopin’s funeral march played by the orchestra, as well as the Massimo theater workers have staged their complaint against cuts in funding provided by the Sicilian Region and the failure to appoint a new Board of Directors of the organization. A symbolic protest that evokes a scenario that many fear: the closure of the Massimo Bellini. The Commissioner’s mandate Alessandro Diliberto has expired a few days ago but nothing has changed: back wages, sums vainly waited for months and no appointment of the board. Only one thing remains: the fear that the new opera season will never see the light. The workers of the theater so they decided to delay of thirty minutes of Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor and to engage in a funeral procession to protest. Soon after, the union representatives have read a statement addressed to the leaders of the regional government and the mayor Enzo Bianco (President of the theater). Employees are reminded that the city “did not receive salaries from the month of September for the failures of the administration has not prepared for the time the final budget 2012 and also because the region has not yet completed the delivery of the first-monthly.” The dock is the Region, guilty of having “repeatedly approved spending cuts to the contribution of the Body, undermining financial stability, the artistic quality and employment levels.” Workers do not exclude to stage other forms of protest if the situation was not unlocked. Their appeal is in addition to the one launched yesterday afternoon by the Mayor of Catania. “After expiry of the mandate of the Commissioner there is still the Board of Directors and this is extremely risky because an opera is a delicate creature,” said White. Mayor pushes so that you will soon appoint the board of directors of the theater. “Lack guidance is likely to create problems for the new season: it must be, then, that all eventually do their part for the good of Maximus, as they have done up to now the workers, who have great difficulty secured between the artistic quality of concerts and performances ” . “You have to understand – White said – that the Bellini is one of the most valuable assets that owns and Catania is our pride, our identity, our own history.” In short, the clock is ticking. In this regard, the unions unions, which have called the strike for the concerts on 14 and 15 December, requested an urgent meeting with the President of the Sicilian Region and the Mayor White.

SICILY? – WHAT ABOUT MALTA? – IT’S ONLY 60 MILES SOUTH!

Unfortunately the arts are amongst the first domains to suffer from the multi-faceted dysfunctions of national and regional politics. With the ‘Bellini’ I am not surprised about its current situation: I am rather surprised how it survived all these years. The Bellini is a gem, the music made there is great, but the social climate in Sicily is notoriously challenging.

    Now…

60 miles southwards of Sicily lies the island of Malta, which in terms of arts is the pits – not because professional people or talent are rare (most artists, however, do leave), but because the parties (the one currently in office is the big specialist) tend to promote their lackeys to the top arts management positions even when these are semi-illiterate and complete Philistines.

Malta’s capital, Valletta, will be host to the European City of the Year celebrations in 2018 (V18). Wayne Marshall, who had been appointed by the previous government as artistic director of the V18 organisation committee, has recently been sacked because according to the V18’s current chairman (whose lack of culture is abysmal), “Marshall is a very good conductor but he’s definitely not artistic director”.

More info about Wayne Marshall’s and other organisers’ dismissal, the background of this chairman, and the string of recent arts’ controversies can be found here (the vast number of surreal artistic appointments that have taken place since the new government was voted-in 8 months ago have not been included):
