Bolshoi eyes three candidates for music director
mainThe Moscow theatre has a hole in the pit and needs to fill it fast.
Three names have been leaked to the Russian press as leading contenders:
– Tugan Sokhiev, a Gergiev protégé, presently head of the DSO Berlin and the Capitole orchestra in Toulouse;
– Vasily Petrenko, chief of the Royal Liverpool and the Oslo Philharmonic and principal guest at the Mikhailovsky in St Petersburg;
– Dmitry Jurowski, younger brother of Vladimir who has repeatedly shunned approaches from the Bolshoi.
Of the three, only the last would be available in the immediate future.
No female candidates? Conspiracy! Misogyny! Outrage!!!
Annoying ideas aside, Petrenko can’t do this gig. He’s far too valuable with Liverpool and Oslo. His Shostakovich is par excellence these days.

In lDec. he expressed to the press his disatisfaction with the lack of economic prevision on the part of the Spanish government in the planning and financing of their orchestras. He explained that this may be a major obstacle in his finding space in his calendar to continue his role as Principal Guest Conductor of the OSCYL.

So unfortunately for Spain, it looks like he may have the extra time to take the Bolshoi gig.
I thought Dmitri Jurowski’s the director of a Belgium opera house. He’s contract there expired already?
Tugan Sokhiev will perfectly fulfill the stereotype of Russian theatre. He has no regard or interest for what is happening on the stage. If that’s the direction they want to go in, it doesn’t say much for Russian opera.
