Bizarre: Bob Dylan is charged with inciting racial hatred

A group of Croats has taken exception to remarks he made last year in Rolling Stone magazine and filed suit in France, where the courts are happy to spend months in cultural contemplation.

  • Simon Mawer says:

He did talk an amazing amount of ill-conceived nonsense about “blood”, though.

  • Talk about taking something out of context and just not understanding someone who frequently speaks in metaphors. The idea that Dylan meant this literally is very doubtful. But if the French courts have nothing better to do than navel gaze I’m sure Dylan couldn’t care less.

  • Lauren says:

I read his statement. For me, it sounded like he was talking about the evolutionary Fight or Flight processes in our wiring that senses threat at a cellular or “Blood” level. And, the word “blood” in the poetic sense means something deep and elemental. The Serbs and Croats, like so many other tribes throughout history, find relationship through bloodshed and strife. Dylan was doing nothing other than pointing out the darker currents running through humanity.

Hate speech sucks but this is not that.
