Holland’s second orchestra is hit by conductor cancellation

Now the Rotterdam Philharmonic has been hit by Yannick Nezet-Séguin’s withdrawal from this week’s trip to Linz, Vienna and St Petersburg.

Indeed there is a typical Dutch bug which causes hollanditis. The locals are imune to it since they are the survivers of generations of victims of this mysterious affection. The symtoms are a sudden stage fright and the obsessive idea that your best achievements count for nothing and that any artistic endeavor is merely some sort of entertainment for left-wing elites. Janssons’ withdrawel in China is thus fully explained, since that country is filled to the brim with left-wing thinking. (The photo of Janssons shows the typical facial hollandite expression, easily recognized by therapists and first described in the July 1995 issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry.) The bug is caught right at the beginning of musical job contracts in Holland, followed by an incubation period which can extend from 2 to 10 years or longer, and then suddenly burst into the open with egalitarian inferiority obsessions. Researchers at DUMB (Darlington University of Musical Bugs) carried-out experiments which show that at least one factor which weakens the artistic defense system is the flat landscape of the Netherlands, which together with weather conditions create the vulnerability to infections, positively lethal for foreign musicians innocently settling in the Low Lands.

Anyhow again, the Concertgebouw is a building in Amsterdam, that is quite immobile, even though during some thorough renovation project about twenty years ago it hung almost in the air. The orchestra that travels with or without Janssons is the (Royal) Concertgebouw Orchestra, which is a separate entity.
