The instrument played by America’s most influential violin teacher is on the auction block this month. Expect the hammer to fall just short of $2million.

Dorothy DeLay taught at Juilliard from 1948 to her death in 2002. Her pupils included Itzhak Perlman, Midori, Nigel Kennedy, Sarah Chang, Gil Shaham and Kyung-Wha Chung.

With Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and the mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, Miss DeLay put Kansas on the musical map.

  • Evan Solomon says:

I’m not aware that Kyung-Wha Chung studied with Miss DeLay. Can anyone confirm this?

  • Robert Levin says:

I also have no recollection of “Cookie”, as we knew her at Ivan Galamian’s Meadowmount School of Music and Juilliard, ever studying with Miss DeLay. I remember her as a student of Sally Thomas and Galamian. Of course, it is enitrely possible that she played for DeLay, as did Pinchas Zukerman, some years later.

  • Camilo Peggiero says:

No. With Ivan Galamian. Substitute for Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Anne Akiko Meyers or Cho Liang Lin, among many others.
