Dudamel's Mahler cycle: A survival plan
mainOK, this I really needed.
I shall be out in Los Angeles the week after next giving seven Why Mahler? talks in as many days during Gustavo Dudamel’s cycle with his two orchestras, the Simon Bolivar Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
I shall also be sending live reports from the cycle (please get in touch if you want to publish it in other languages).
But the prospect is still daunting: how are we to get through the intensity of it sane and alive?
Christian Hertzog in La Weekly publishes a survivor’s guide, including some video advice from Why Mahler?
Enjoy those talks in LA! Looks really interesting
I hope they are paying you a lot, because this is the level you will be addressing. I wrote to the folks over at the LAPO about the spelling and other mistakes on their website a month ago, and of course they did nothing. Here is one of the most glaring.
“Finally, as part of the 2010/11 season with the LA Phil, Gustavo not only presented Mahler 9, but also took THAT piece on a highly-acclaimed tour of Europe, including a two-night stand at Vienna’s legendary Musikveiren [sic] – where Mahler himself conducted that very work.”

You would think these people would do some research before they write…
Well, they don’t even read CD reviews any more in LA, apparently…
How to get through the intensity and stay sane and alive? Try a few Margaritas in the mornings.
Take painkillers. Both his Mahler performances in London recently showed far more hype than any real depth of talent for the music.
Great to hear you’ll be in LA for the Mahler Project. We missed hearing your talks last May in Leipzig at the Gewandhaus Mahler Festival, so now’s our chance.
When are people going to WAKE UP to the fact that this guy has done a good job with his youth orchestra ….. AND THAT’S ALL!!! I’m sick of the hype surrounding this non-entity………
