I’ve just received notice of the death of Tony Fell, who led Boosey & Hawkes through turbulent times, narrowly saving it from the clutches of its chief competitor. Tony was 78. He was at one point chairman of the Royal Philharmomic Society, a thankless task that he conducted with good grace.

I enjoyed his company over lunch, though he was terribly wary of what I might write. My condolences to Janis.

Here‘s the official company obit.

Sad news indeed. BTW, it’s Janis, not Janice.

Tony loved the RPS, put huge energies into it and turned around its fortunes. He also asked for donations to be sent there in his memory. Not thankless in his view. He was also the best cellist any quartet could ever want. Maybe I should qualify that as ‘amateur quartet’…!
