Hildegard of Bingen has been waiting nine centuries for the nod from Rome, but her fellow-German has finally seen the light of her holiness.

She is to be named a Doctor of the Church in October, and a saint some time sooner. And about time, too. Report here.

Before she can be canonised there must, I believe, be “proof” that a certain number of miracles are attributable to her intercession. Has anyone said what these intercessions are? Or could this be a case of a German pope fast-tracking a German saint?

Honestly, would anyone who celebrates the achievements of this woman want her memory to be tarnished by the tawdry pantomime the Catholic church goes through to nominate its chief fairies at the bottom of the garden?
