I’ve just received notice of the death of Tony Fell, who led Boosey & Hawkes through turbulent times, narrowly saving it from the clutches of its chief competitor. Tony was 78. He was at one point chairman of the Royal Philharmomic Society, a thankless task that he conducted with good grace.

I enjoyed his company over lunch, though he was terribly wary of what I might write. My condolences to Janis.

The guest director of next year’s Brighton Festival has just been announced.

It’s Vanessa Redgrave.

Radicals of the world rejoice. The rest can reach for their lawyers – or, if really stressed, a Brighton speciality: organic drinks at the festival bar. Mine’s a malt. Make that a double.

We are delighted to announce the legendary stage, screen and television actress and doyenne of the performing arts, Vanessa Redgrave, as Guest Director of Brighton Festival 2012 which takes place on 5 – 27 May. Full programme details including events in which she will be participating will be available at the public launch on Wednesday 22 February. A media launch date will be announced shortly.

One key Brighton Festival commission already announced for 2012 isThe Rest is Silence, from Brighton Dome and Festival’s Associate company,dreamthinkspeak which will run for the full three weeks of the Festival. Artist Director Tristan Sharps marries the worlds of art installation and theatre in this site specific deconstruction of Hamlet interweaving performance, film and installation to create a vigorous new interpretation that cuts to the heart of the play. It will examine the play’s themes and characters and will boldly juxtapose scenes, speeches and sequences from completely different areas of the play within a specially designed and multilayered structure, allowing the action to unfold on different levels and on all sides. It also forms part of the World Shakespeare Festival. The last dreamthinkspeak commission, which premiered during the 2010 Festival – Before I Sleep – played to sold out audiences, resulting in a further six week sell-out run, simply on word-of-mouth, as the ‘must see’ show. It has since toured internationally to critical and audience acclaim.

Our courts correspondent files the sad case of a composer whose accounts were cleaned out by a team that were hired to debug his computer.

The composer is called Roger Davidson. His great-grandad founded Schlumberger, the oil-services company. Mr Davidson is founder and president of the Society for Universal Sacred Music. He’s not available for comment. A man is on trial for the scam in White Plains, NY.

The Theodor Lessing prize for criticism, worth 20,000 Euros, has been given to the stage director Claus Peymann, head of the Berliner Ensemble.

Am I missing something here?

Apparently not. Peymann, 74,  qualifies for the award because of ‘the social themes’ he reflects in theatre. That makes him a critic, they say.

In which case, the people who are sent by newspapers to review his performances  must be artists.

Funny old world.

It used to be the Grawemeyer Award, which started at $150,000 and are now pegged at $200,000. It is doled out over several years. The latest winner is Esa-Pekka Salonen.

But, coming up on the outside is the Charles Ives Living Award, which gives a composer $200,000 over two years to finish a commissioned work, during which time he or she must eschew ‘all salaried employment’. (As if there were salaried jobs for composers…)

The winner, announced last night, is James Mattheson of Brooklyn.  He is writing a violin concerto for the Chicago Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Chicago premiere will be conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. The pyramid gets quite small at the top.
