Barenboim to perform at Sanderling memorial concert

The late Kurt Sanderling will be laid to rest in a private, family ceremony in Berlin on Monday.

A memorial concert will be held on October 9 at 8pm at the Konzerthaus in East Berlin, where the great and humble man was chief conductor from 1960 to 1977.

Daniel Barenboim will play a concerto. Two of Sanderling’s sons, Thomas and Stefan, will conduct.

Gifts in Kurt’s memory can be made to “Orchesterakademie beim Konzerthaus e.V.”

  • East Berlin hasn’t existed for a while. The Konzerthaus sits in Gendarmenmarkt in the dead center (“Mitte”) of the unified city.

  • Do you know what the programme will be for the Sanderling Memorial Concert? For me it is a shame that Barenboim will be the conductor, as I believe he dislikes Shostakovich, who was a friend and a central composer to Sanderling. I believe the Shostakovich 15th Symphony would be the ideal work for a tribute/memorial concert to Kurt Sanderling. He was a musician’s musician, very understated, but one of the great conductors in the 20th Century.
