The International Classical Music Awards have given their first trophy for Lifetime Achievement to… the utterly wonderful and universally beloved Menahem Pressler.

Menahem, 86, was the pianist of the Beaux Arts Trio. He is now the most demanding and in-demand performance teacher anywhere on the classical circuit.
Arte, the European culture channel, will screen a film about him on March 14. On the 20th, he will speak about his life at the Cité de la Musique in Paris and three days later he will give a recital there. Don’t even think of missing it.
The ICMA awards are decided by editors of music magazines across Europe, excluding the British sheets. Their judgement, in this instance, is infallible.

Of course, this award is wonderful news, and very much deserved! This is especially good news for Pressler’s fans in Syracuse, since they can soon celebrate with him. He will have a master class at the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University (open only to sponsors and students) on Saturday, 9 April at 2 P.M. There will be a public Pressler solo recital on Sunday, 10 April at 2 P.M. in the Setnor School. (I have no connection with this concert, nor does WCNY: I just want to get the word out.) Information about tickets, repertoire and more is available here:

I met him recently at a reception in Verbier. I wondered why, since I have attended his performances literally for my entire life, why he has stayed exactly the same and I have turned from a young to an old man. “It’s the music that keeps me young.” he explained.
