He is an incredible musician, fantastic conductor and a very kind person! He will be very much missed in Mannheim but so well deserved for his new post! Wishing all the best for his future position

    Big shoes to fill.

  • Bruce says:

Seriously though, at what point does “a job once held by” return to being just a job? For example, is Aachen still “Karajan’s old job,” or has its status expired?

    • Petros Linardos says:

A job held by [one person] is arguably ridiculous, especially if we are looking at a distant past, like Aachen. Few if any Aachen orchestral musicians who played under Karajan will still be alive.

On the other hand, I like to look at the history of an orchestra’s leadership. Some have an impressive lineage, like the Minnesota Orchestra. With the CBSO, it is impossible not to think of its recent succession of young leaders who then moved on to high profile careers.

  • Conducting Feminista says:

They would have been much better off selecting a woman conductor instead of this whippersnapper.
