The MUK – Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien – has approinted Jennifer Stumm as its next professor of viola, starting September.

Jennifer, a Curtis grad, is from Atlanta, Georgia. She runs an Illumina collective in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Vienna is lucky to have her.

    Congratulations! She’s a marvelous violist!

Absolutely!!! A marvelous, wise choice indeed. Brava Jennifer!

    “Approinted” [sic]?

  • Dan P. says:

Good luck to her but perhaps they thought that, given her name, she would be a quiet addition to the faculty and not some loud American. (and I say this as an American.)

For those who might be interested, Vienna has two college level music schools.
One is the MUK mentioned above, the other is the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien (MDW). The latter is larger and more famous — Schoenberg, Webern, et. al. The American trumpeter Carol Dawn Reinhart was a professor at the MDW for many years. She was a student of Helmut Wobisch. Some history around him which makes it interesting and complex that he mentored an American woman trumpeter.

    • Daniel Loos says:

William, As famous alumni of MDW I would list Abbado, Karajan, Sibelius, Orozco-Estrada, Mahler, Mehta, Oliver von Dohnányi, Hugo Wolf, Uchida, Zemlinsky, Kirill Petrenko, and Buchbinder; and as famous teachers Salieri, and Swarowsky, because neither Webern nor Schönberg were students or professors of the Universität (although I think Schönberg had a private class there for a year)!
