Petr Weigl, who died in Parague on July 14,  directed films of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (1992), Rusalka (1977) and Let’s Make an Opera (1996).

He also directed in major opera houses, notably Salome in Berlin.

    His filmed version of Delius’ A Village Romeo and Juliet was excellent (despite some uncomfortable lip-synching). Weigl really gave the opera breadth; the images were spot-on for the music.
