  • Michael Comins says:

“Concertmaster” of the cellos? No. Principal cellist, yes. Concertmaster is a term reserved for the leader as you say in the UK. Fine player, at any rate.

    • norman lebrecht says:

The Germans often call the leader of the cellos ‘concertmaster’. Mahler certainly did so.

    • MacroV says:

The Czech Philharmonic also uses the term “Concertmaster” for some of its section principals.

    • M2N2K says:

It does make sense to use the term “concertmaster” in this case because in Russia they call every string principal “концертмейстер”.

AD made wonderful recording of contemporary Russian composers cello sonatas, concertos. He made move to Israel because of love of his life, risking his career. On working visa he played in 3rd rate orchestra in Israel. But after returning to Moscow was principal cellist in best orchestra of Bolshoi theatre. RIP
