Slipped Disc reported three months ago that a well-known flute professor had been let go by the University of Cincinnati after allegations of misconduct with students.

He has been named today by local media after the University confirmed it had investigated claims by up to nine individuals and had allowed him quietly to retire in December.

Bradley Garner, 61, denied the accusations, some dating back to the 1990s.

Among the accusations cited by cincinnati.com, a former UC professor also told investigators he witnessed Garner’s sexual misconduct with students, including videos of Garner having sexual relations with two students…. Garner set up a hidden camera and secretly filmed himself having sexual relations with students, former CCM adjunct professor Randy Bowman told investigators. Bowman said Garner showed him two of the videos.

Garner, a well-known virtuoso, is reported to be on the teaching staff at Queens College, NY, and at Juilliard’s pre-college division. He confirms that information on his Facebook page.

The issue of sexual harrassment is of intense concern in Cincinnati, which is the home town of the deposed Met conductor, James Levine.

It’s of “intense concern” everywhere. Cincinnati has nothing to do with it!

  • Old Man in the Midwest says:

He can fight with Jimmy on who gets the top bunk in their prison cell.

  • Robert Holmén says:

“Garner set up a hidden camera and secretly filmed himself having sexual relations with students…”

In case anyone was wondering if being smart went with being a flute virtuoso.

BTW, I’d suggest blurring out the face of the student in that stock photo so she is not tarred by association.

    Yawn……

  • Jill says:

My daughter received a free ride to his studio… Sent her to Eastman instead after interviewing some of his Asian Students and hearing the same rumors. I am 200k in debt but it was worth every penny.

    • Antonia says:

I’m sorry that you were forced to spend $200,000 in order to prevent your gifted daughter from being mistreated!

I’m wondering, why did you specifically talk with his “Asian” students? Are these the only students he mistreated? Or otherwise, why use this descriptor; why does it have anything to do with anything? Thanks.

      • Bruce says:

I hadn’t heard anything about Garner until this came out (I was already a grown-up by the time he started teaching at Cincinnati, and I never had any students who were interested in going there so I never had any reason to ask around about him), but once it did, it turned out that it was a pretty common refrain. He supposedly “went after” his Asian students, either sexually or in an emotionally abusive way. People learned not to apply there, if they heard the stories from a trusted source.

        • Antonia says:

Ah, well, in this case, then, of course this all makes sense! How very awful! Thank you for taking a moment to share about this and for not becoming defensive as I know things can become “touchy” here at this website, and I’m afraid my question may have been too pointed in this case! Please forgive me.

Thanks again and have a great rest of the weekend.

      • Jill says:

First because he prefered asian students. Secondly because in the competition that my daughter attended all the students from his studio were asians. I heard the same story from all of them.

  • Anonymous says:

Was it consensual? If so, why should we care? If it wasn’t consensual, what a sick freak.

    • Bruce says:

      From the linked article:

The University of Cincinnati investigated complaints against then-professor Bradley Garner in October 2016 and found evidence of “unwanted sexual advances and verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature,” a “hostile environment” and conduct that was “severe, persistent or pervasive,” according to a report completed by school investigators the following month.

      and

“If we were one-on-one, he tried to kiss me on my face,” a 2016 CCM graduate told The Enquirer. “He makes the girls in the studio feel extremely uncomfortable and sexualized.”

Another former student said she heard Garner say to a classmate: “I can tell by the way you play your instrument you are not good in bed. Would you ever have sex with a person the way you are playing this?”

      and

Everyone was afraid to speak up because of what Garner would do, the 2016 graduate said. “If you got on his bad side, he could trash your career.” Even now, many of Garner’s current and former students spoke to The Enquirer on the condition they not be named for fear of retaliation.

So, um, I’m guessing (a) not consensual, or not all of them, and (b) even if there were some students who were interested, probably the university’s code of conduct would have required him not to behave inappropriately with them.

    • Jim Norman says:

Can a student really consent to her teacher, a man who could “trash your career?”

      • Stephen says:

The answer is “Yes”. A professor of English in a French provincial university used this method to have sex with new students in the 60s and 70s.

This one time at band camp, I stuck a flute up my…

I don’t think the Wildacres Conference Center, which rents its facility to groups like flute camp, is going to be thrilled with those comments. It was founded decades ago to provide spiritually-oriented groups a place to meet and continues that mission today. I was flabbergasted that Thibeault also called the woman who tried to help regarding young students who came to her, an “old biddy.” Inappropriate language under any circumstances, but especially odd as the good samaritan is at least 10 years younger than Thibeault. In addition, Wildacres is in a *very* remote location, which likely added to the young students’ distress.

“Me Too” hits the flute world! A strikingly similar case is apparently hitting the French press right now. A very renowned French flutist and professor formerly on the Paris Conservatory (Bradley Garner pales in fame & stature next to him) has been formally accused by a student. I believe he’s been found guilty. Initials PYA. Here’s the story, which is circulating in the international flute community right now. http://www.parismatch.com/Actu/Societe/Victime-d-atteintes-sexuelles-par-un-celebre-flutiste-Lea-denonce-et-alerte-1454915

  • BETTY DOUGLAS says:

As of today, Yamaha has dropped Garner, NYU ceased employment, and Juilliard Prep said it did not renew his contract in the fall of 2017.

  • Larry P. says:

I always considered [redacted] to be a scumbag. He is also overrated, one of those people that normally wouldn’t have a career if it weren’t for family influence and corruption. Now he has to pay for what he did to all those Asian students. My heart goes out to all those girls that he took advantage of.

No surprise about P [redacted]. Once a flutist was running late for a competition and several people just said, “Oh…she is obviously with P right now.” LOL
