This orchestra plays mostly to under-45s
mainJust look at those stats.
It’s the Singapore Symphony.
Has anyone got a lower demographic?
UPDATE: This chart represents the average for all SSO subscription concerts in 2017, excluding Pops and Family concerts.
What is the data source? Does it track other orchestras?
World’s lowest birth rate too, apparently. http://statestimesreview.com/2017/02/11/singapore-set-world-record-lowest-birth-rate-again/
My thought is that all of the other symphony orchestras in the Far East — from China and Japan to Malaysia and Korea — likely have similar audience demographics.
That is extra interesting since Singapore has one of the highest life expectancies in the world.
-I’m going to guess the over-60 set in Singapore was not raised on orchestral music but the younger set is more westernized and also has had exposure to it in films and TV.
-The younger demographic may have more money to spend on tickets than retirees.
Age doesn’t matter as long as the ranks are replenished.
Nothing surprising. All the big european orchestras touring in Asia are treated by the young audience there as they would be the rockstars…. but it still doesn’t change the fact that I can’t explain this phenomenon…
My opinion, and that’s all it is, is that they’re less in thrall to the West’s MSM driven celebrity obsession.
A solid sample were surveyed one concert, I think the Stephen Hough / Rachmaninov 1 concert. Music and evening chosen will have a fair amount to do with it.
There is a fairly weighty ex pat crowd which will do weird things to the demogs, but there is also a very, very solid young local musician scene here and there are always plenty of students in the audience.
When a top price ticket for a subscription concert is US$60ish dropping to $10 (and not some god forsaken seat at the back around a corner), in a modern hall you are always going to get a decent young crowd in. And those prices get you Hough, Isserlis and the like.
What’s wrong with old people? Not pretty or ‘right on’ enough?
Maybe just reflecting the local demography.
Terrible graph that is missing the basics of what a data graph should be showing.
