John Ward, principal percussion of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for decades and mentor to countless fine musicians, died last night.

By all accounts, a lovely man.

    is he the father of conductor Duncan Ward?

      Duncan Ward’s website says that he comes from a non-musical family background. So almost certainly not. (Ward is in any case a very common name).

        No relation to Duncan Ward, John’s sons are Stephen (me) and Philip
