John Ward, principal percussion of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for decades and mentor to countless fine musicians, died last night.

By all accounts, a lovely man.

is he the father of conductor Duncan Ward?

  • Ken Sumner says:

I met John Ward for the first time on the cricket field. He was playing for the Liverpool
Phil cricket team, and they had an annual match against my works team – circa 1953/55.

A lovely man. What a percussionist I was always fascinated by his playing, particularly
    on side drum.
