Watch: Crash, bash, instrument smashes at climax of Mahler’s 8th

Here’s what happened this week when the Danish Radio Symphony played Mahler’s 8th symphony with Fabio Luisi. The DR techs have helpfully offered a slow-mo replay to show how the cymbal shatters towards the end of the first movement.

    That’s still the first movement of course, not the finale.

      To be fair, the headline only says “climax,” not “finale.” And knowing Mahler’s proclivities, it’s not likely he’s going to be have only one climax in an evening.

      Adolescent humor aside, it’s fortunate that the shard of cymbal didn’t fly high enough to hit anyone in the choir. Yikes!
