He has also hogged the Little Staatsoper’s casting budget, leaving lower-quality options for guest conductors.
No idea if that’s right, but hardly a surprise that the music director would lead the best-prepared, best-cast productions; as leader of the institution he has to make sure that when he’s conducting, the house is showing itself at its best. And a figure like Barenboim is going to attract the A-list singers, directors, designers, anyway.

Of course he does the big things. A lesser Music Director would be there less often. HE NEVER STOPS. Things will change subtly artistically from next season with the new Intendant who is NEITHER a Director nor a Conductor, and only just over half Barenboim’s age.. But the possibilities of the new/old theatre are almost limitless.
