Hamburg’s 800 million-Euro concert hall has called back the builders for emergency repairs. Part of the building will be shut while the work is carried out.

The foyer of the small hall has suffered extensive water damage, apparently a leak from the heating system.

It is reported that the hall’s management covered up the damage with blow-dryers until the end of the season but are now having to face structural issues. At least one wall will need to be demolished and rebuilt. They will start relaying the floor of the foyer next week.

  • Is it a joke?
I mean this €789 million cultural monument.

  • Anon says:

The style of reporting here is appalling. No, the Elbphilharmonie is not shutting the doors. The foyer of the *small* hall got some work done, most over the summer anyway.
No, the initial damage was not ‘covered up’ by the management, but the initial standard procedure to deal with the water damage was to use blow-dryers. It was later found that there were places that still developed mold. When that was assessed, immediately the then necessary measures were taken. What you read here above is false news, made to attract clickbait.

This construction is a monumental rip-off.

    • Anon says:

It probably is, considering the actual concert hall has troublesome acoustics, but that is not relevant to the water damage issue.
Also there is much more in this building than *just* a large concert hall.

That is absolutely not what the linked article states. “Gained in translation?”

  • Father Ted says:

I advised them before they built it but the buggers just ignored my advice they were so much in a hurry to get it erected for political reasons they forgot all about building regs and fire safety! It’s a proverbial death trap like the Titanic.

I took one look at it during the opening and came to the same conclusion. Perhaps the present leak comes from a fridge in the apartments way above. The same thing happened to my sister’s apartment on the Queensland Gold Coast in Australia; she was on the 4th floor and a fridge leaking between the 10th and 20th damaged with water all those apartments below it.

  • Nik says:

Be that as it may, at least it’s open and the damage can be fixed.
    Now for Brandenburg Airport…
