Glyndebourne names its first Vanessa

The countryhouse festival will present Samuel Barber’s opera for the first time next summer.

The cast was announced today:

The Old Baroness DORIS SOFFEL

Among other Gly-lights, Dame Sarah Connolly will sing Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Kate Lindsay and Kate Royal are Octavian and the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier and the Moldavian soprano Olga Busuioc is cast as Madam Butterfly.

    Beautiful voice. I would love to hear this production, it’s among my favourite operas (for the music. I absolutely loathe the libretto.)

    Vanessa is certainly a meaty and technically difficult role, and has to pull off maturity and eternal youth within the same character with cohesion.
