Death of a distinguished Canadian soprano, 86
mainThe death has been announced of Irene Salemka, a Canadian who joined Frankfurt State Opera when Georg Solti was music director and enjoyed a good career on major European stages and on record. Solti engaged her at Covent Garden for the premiere of Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.
She married into Canada’s McGillivray singing family and returned home a national heroine.
Impressive tone, but the slurs and her German are below provincial!
The premiere of MSND was at Aldeburgh, not CG.
