From the Lebrecht Album of the Week:

I hope this is not Renée Fleming’s final record. The American soprano, in her late 50s, is closing her stage career with the voice unblemished and the memories fond. It would be a pity if her legacy on Decca was to be concluded by this album, which plays to all her weaknesses.

….her rendition of “Com’e bello” from Scala’s “Lucrezia” in 1998 is still my favorite … Some said she could not sing belcanto … I think the matter is in attitude , if you have an attitude you will always have what to say ( in her case – to sing ) … just my opinion, of course , any way she is in her late 50s and she is in opera – only live sound and no mikes ….

The high point of her career for me will forever be her album “Dark Hope” .

  • SergioM says:

The sent me the CD last week but when I read what was on it I just couldn’t listen to it

  • Ungeheuer says:

The only selection of worth in the album is Knoxville. But then we have memorable renditions by Steber, Price and Upshaw. Fleming cannot match let alone surpass them. The remaining selections, particularly the Björk remakes, are especially embarrassing.

    • Cyril Blair says:

The Bjork songs are, maybe not unlistenable, but deeply unfortunate! Or maybe unlistenable, now that I’m replaying them in my head.

  • David Boxwel says:

The question is: what is there left that she hasn’t already performed? It’s pretty amazing it’s taken this long to do the Barber. (I admire her for recording, more recently, and so beautifully, Egon Wellesz and Erich Zeisl).

  • Mike Schachter says:

Why would anyone want to do Bjork? Even Bjork.

  • David Osborne says:

Her decision to record the little known, prophetic sequel to Knoxville Summer of 1915 is however to be commended.

  • Henrique Medeiros says:

Personally, I don’t think this was such a bad album. I prefer to believe this as challenge and experiment from Fleeming… Even in those tracks with Bjork songs – and I’m not a fan from Bjork, at all.
