York Minster this week sacked all 30 of its bell-ringers.

In a letter headed ‘York Minster invites everyone to discover God’s love’, the Rev Canon Peter Moger has told the volunteers that a professional would be hired in the New Year to select a new team.

Until then, no bells will be rung in York, not even at Christmas. And no love.

  • John Borstlap says:

Wasn’t it the bishop of York who declaired, years ago, that he did not believe in God? It seemed a violation of his contract.

    • Will Duffay says:

No, it was the Bishop of Durham several decades ago who, when at York, questioned the literal truth of the resurrection (foolishly talking openly of subtle theological matters). And then not long afterwards York Minster suffered a huge fire, and people made the connection.

  • V.Lind says:

Why didn’t they wait till the new year to silence the bells? Something very odd here.

  • Robert Holmén says:

So what was unsatisfactory about the current team?

  • Dileep Gangolli says:

Obviously another casualty of the Brexit decision.

  • Frederick West says:

The good Lord works in mysterious ways…..
It seems that the unconnected hierarchy of the clergy work in unfathomable ways. Is it no wonder that the C of E is in such a mess when all they can do is pick on the volunteer soft targets whilst the rest of the edifice crumbles around them?

I hope this is the correct link!

Their ‘carillonneur’ has just been suspended for daring to pass comment on the situation. Untolled shenanigans indeed.
