Tom Zajac, a member of the Piffaro group who played recorder, bagpipe, sackbut, pipe & tabor, flute and percussion, died in August of brain cancer.

This week, the pipes came out for his memorial service through the streets of New York City from St. John’s Cathedral to a nearby bar. Many early music eminences took part in the parade.

  • James of Thames says:

Wonderful! A fitting tribute to a consummate musician.

  • Shannon Cline says:

Thanks for the mention, Mr. Lebrecht. It was a moving and bittersweet day – so many dear friends and colleagues made the trip to New York to say goodbye to Tom.

  • Shannon again says:

Goodness, I just came across this while looking for an old concert video of Tom and cried all over again.

His contributions to early music live on; we’re drawing on wonderful arrangements he made of pieces from the Codex Trujillo de Peru in our (Piffaro) upcoming concert. I hope that he can somehow hear.
